The Wigan Athletic Football Club was founded in 1932, and in the 70's it was a founding member of the Northern Premier League, winning its first trophy during the 84-86 season. The DW Stadium, inaugurated in august 1999 is their home, it has capacity for more than 24,000 spectators.

One of its top players ever is Charles N'Zogbia, born in Normandy and raised in Paris who scored his first goal against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Wigan Athletic, aka The Latics, have been champions several times in third and second division leagues.
