Calgary Flames

The Calgary Flames are a National Hockey League team with a rather controversial name, to say the least. The Calgary Flames (a name chosen in 1980 when the team was renamed) were named after a fire started by Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman (1864) when the franchise moved to the Calgary Area, in Atlanta, Georgia (they were originally known as the Atlanta Flames from 1972 to the 1979-80 season). Al MacNeil played for the team, although his time with them was brief (he was team's first coach). Some Hockey Hall of Fame members that formed part of their ranks were: Bob Johnson (Coach), Al MacInnis, Joe Mullen and Lanny McDonald, among others. Considered one of the most solid professional ice hockey teams in the world, they seized their first Stanley Cup in 1989.
